Girard Garden

We are a small urban community garden, filled with friendly people from all walks of life. We are a neighborly bunch, who like to garden, eat veggies and learn about growing anything that will fit in our small plot of land.

We are located on the corner of W. Girard Avenue and N. 20th Street, on the Philadelphia Technician Training Institute’s property. Look for the shed and the jungle of tomato bushes and you will have found it!

From the founders

Urban gardening (it could be argued) is a trendy thing these days. Especially here in Philadelphia, where vacant lots abound, a multitude of environmentally conscious, artistic, idealistic, and otherwise well-meaning citizens are seizing property, turning up the soil and putting it to good use. We put ourselves right in the thick of this group of city dwellers who hope to see our city grow healthier and more beautiful by the minute. And whether it’s “trendy” or not, we offer no apology for our effort. We think it’s amazing.

The idea for this garden started in 2010 because the guy cutting the grass at the Philadelphia Technician Training Institute (former Berean Institute) was trying to work himself out of a job. But the Girard Garden, in its short existence, has already proven to be much more than a self-sustaining lawn care option. We’ve met new neighbors, we’ve watched plants sprout from seeds for the first time in my life, and we have the chance to create something beautiful where before there was nothing. We can only hope that the community and beauty continue to grow on our little corner of North Philadelphia. We welcome more neighbors to be a part. Stop by and say hello.
